Know More about Fentanyl
What Is Fentanyl?
Pharmaceutical fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever. A synthetic opioid is a humanmade opiate made in a lab. Opiates are originally derived from poppy flowers. It is treated for intense pain, usually, pain from cancer or other diseases.
Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine. It was not developed to be illegally used. It is often used by those who use heroin and other opiate drugs. Because it is so potent it is often found in other recreational drugs used by addicts. This is not a good thing.
This is not a good thing because fentanyl is so strong that accidental overdoses are common. Many people are not even aware they are taking it because the drug they are using is laced with it.
If fentanyl is taken by someone who does not usually use it, it is so potent it can harm them. This is because their bodies haven’t developed a tolerance to it. Tolerance is what happens when someone takes a substance repeatedly. It means the body needs more of it to reach that euphoria, or high.
Even people who use heroin on the regular run the risk of a dangerous reaction to fentanyl.
Fentanyl is also known as “white heroin” or “chiclets”.
Increase In Popularity
Fentanyl use wasn’t as high a decade ago. Instead, it stuck with its intended use. It was used in hospitals during operations. This changed once its effectiveness at managing pain was realized. Especially in patients with intense pain that was difficult to treat.
It had fewer side effects on other drugs and worked faster, which was part of the appeal. It could reduce complication risks in some patients.
When it started to be used for more than cancer pain was when it became more popular. Many variants were made, including:
- Nasal Sprays
This made it more portable and easily consumable. This is what helped it make its way into the illegal drug market. Drugs that are only used one specific way aren’t as easy to distribute.
Fentanyl started being frequently used as a cutting agent. A cutting agent is a drug that is mixed with other drugs to bulk it up or increase the strength of the drug. This means they can gain more of a profit.
Because Fentanyl was a white powder it was easy to mix with cocaine, heroin, meth, and other drugs. Fentanyl is so strong that it could easily make a drug stronger. This meant dealers could stretch supplies to make more money.
The negative impact was that more people were unknowingly taking fentanyl, which could cause an adverse reaction. This could even cause overdoses in people who’d never taken it before because it was too strong.
Fentanyl is so scary a drug to the population because it can be hidden in anything. It being hidden is what can lead to so many accidental deaths.
